Chapter 6

Today is Sunday and since Uncle Hammer is in town they used his car to get to church. He began to talk to the congregation and the conversation quickly goes toward his old car. Papa gives Joe a ride in the yellow Ford. Joe says that he likes the ford better than the grey Packard. During church, after her favorite part, Cassie falls asleep. Big Ma quickly awakens her when she notices that she is asleep. Cassie then notices that on the back row there was a stranger. After church Cassie discovers that the "stranger" was Mama's nephew, Cousin Bud. Mama and Bud were talking for hours. Bud tells her that his wife is white. The news angers Uncle Hammer greatly. He calls Cousin Bud a fool and storms out. Bud feels no guilt for marrying a white woman. Cousin Bud wants to leave but Mama asks him not too. He also tells them about their daughter, Suzella. She doesn't make friends easily and she doesn't have any interest in black people. Bud thinks that it would be good for her to stay with the Logan's house for a while and Mama agrees. On their way to school the next day, the kids found Mr. Farnsworth in a ditch next to his car. He was badly beaten. Jeremy helps them rescue him from dying by driving to a nearby road with him and getting someones attention. that person takes him to a hospital. The whole Logan family hope's he doesn't die because he is the only one that can save them from accusations. While Uncle Hammer tries to start a conversation he finds the picture that Jeremy gave to Cassie and throws it in the fire after giving them a lecture about the dangers of being friendly to white people.

  10. I guess I can kind of see why Uncle Hammer was mad, I mean look at how white people treated black people in general back then, I admit I would have been mad at cousin bud too.

    1. That is very true I agree with you whites are treated great and on the other hand blacks were treated like garbage. Like what did blacks ever do to the whites to get treated like that?
